Radiation in Granite Countertops
Granite countertops have
become very popular in kitchens, bathrooms and bars. There have been quite a few reports and articles addressing the emission
of radon from granite. So far the EPA has not taken a stand on this issue due to lack of research in radiation levels emitted
by the granite. More information will be generated in the future. While the level of radiation will probably be low, long-term
exposure to any ionizing radiation is still a concern. If you have a concern about the possible radiation from granite countertops,
measurements can be taken to determine if any level of radiation is being emitted. This will vary with each countertop due
to its source. Apparently, the granites from South America and Africa have the highest radiation levels. Please feel free
to call for more information or testing on this subject. EIS has the equipment necessary to detect radiation (as alpha or
gamma radiation) from countertops.
